The abandoned cinema Yerevan is situated on Chokolovka next to our platform and it was interesting for us as an object with potential for revitalization. When we were asked to use it and another part of the building to create a scientific hub, we realized that the moment had come. In addition to the cinema itself, the reconstruction project included two more blocks: the first floor of the research institute, in the same building and several garages in the yard.
The task was to develop in a short time a comprehensive project whose main goal is to popularize science among different age and social groups, from children to the elderly. Create a comfortable environment for the work and interaction of scientists. Each block of premises received a certain function. The hall of the cinema should become the main communication center, the first floor of the institute (Collab) - coworking for scientists, and the garage block in the courtyard is reconstructed into the Fablouse workshop (FabHouse).
Communication space
In the space of the movie theater, we wanted to create a multifunctional space, adapted to transformations. Here you can hold an exhibition or a conference, demonstrate popular science films, in the absence of events, a place comfortable enough for meeting and communicating in an open mode. The spirit of the common living room was set by the kitchen bar with a large common table, this is the place where a large community can gather. Finishing solutions take into account the possibility of reuse the remaining plates from marble and shellfish. Panels from plywood can be made in a new fablab. Graffiti in the cinema hall was an economical solution, for which it is not necessary to replace already worn out acoustic panels, the slope for seats, on the contrary, was reconstructed according to modern standards. It was also decided not to change the facade and leave it as it is.
